How to get started selling your art
Like most artists and makers, it can be a fearful task to start selling your work.
How do I get started?
Will anyone like my work.
What is it worth?
How do I deliver my art?
The only way to get started is to get started. You don’t have to figure it all out to get started. I encourage you to do this exercise to jump in.
FOUR STEPS TO GET STARTED
Choose one design or creation that you will start with. Just ONE.
Make that item.
Take a really good photo of the item or mock it up. Put in extra care here. Stage it, use natural lighting, edit the photo if necessary.
Share the item on Facebook and Instagram with this caption:
“I am making _____. If you would like one, it’s $____. Please comment if you’d like to purchase.”
This is the start. This is overcoming your fear and putting your art out there. This will serve as a test case to see if there is a market for your art (at least with the type of people you are friends with). Don’t think too much about the pricing. Look up similar items on Etsy and price in the same range. If you even sell one item, you are on your way.
For me, I posted an idea. A computer generated mock up of something I wanted to make. I had 5 or 6 responses before I even knew how to make the thing I had mocked up. It threw me into gear and my handmade business was born. So…let’s get started.
This is the actual instagram post that launched my business. It’s so simple but it took a great act of courage to post it. I was shaking when I actually hit post.
